Adventures in Ancient China

Discover the wild natural beauty & rich culture of Southwestern China during 3 expansive tours in and around Jinghong.

About Your Trip

You’ll explore a world of ancient customs, overwhelming biodiversity and historical attractions as you journey through Jinghong, “City of Dawn.” Your adventure begins at one of the biggest ecotourism spots in Xishuangbanna, the province’s primitive forest park. At Mengle Dafo Temple, you’ll watch festive folk performances and Songkran activities that are popular among the region’s Dai population. Then, end the day with a leisurely excursion to take in the magnificent riverside landscape.

The following day, you’ll embark on a tour along the ancient Tea Horse Road. Stop in Da Luo to view the boundary marker at No. 299 — one of the country’s numerous inscribed monuments honoring border agreements.

Your final outing includes a visit to a tea garden where you’ll learn the time-honored art of making a tea cake — a compressed block of fermented tea leaves — which you can take home with you. Then, head to the tiny village of Manzhang. You’ll spend the day discovering some of the local traditions of the villagers — even receiving a warm welcome with fruit.

What we love:
• Mengle Dafo Temple, the largest Theravada Buddhist temple in China, is known for its massive Buddha said to look over the town and its inhabitants.
• The ancient Tea Horse Road, also known as the Southern Silk Road, helped spread tea across China from Yunnan province — one of the country’s first tea-producing regions.
• In the village of Manzhang, you’ll have the rare opportunity to learn some Dai techniques and traditions with special hands-on lessons in tent building, paper making (from tree bark), weaving and more!
